Contactless has arrived

Most Courtney buses now accept contactless payment in Slough, Wokingham, Bracknell, Windsor and Maidenhead.

On buses with the appropriate equipment fitted, you can pay using a contactless card displaying the Visa or Mastercard logo or using a mobile device with Apple Pay or Google Pay.  Unfortunately, we do not accept payments by American Express or Maestro. The maximum transaction for any ticket combinations on a contactless card is £30.

Will I get a receipt? Yes, you will get a receipt once your payment has gone through, along with a ticket for your journey. Be sure to ask your driver for your receipt. If you have not received one.

How do I pay with contactless? Tell the driver what ticket you require, then when the ticket has been set up, present your contactless card or phone on the ticket machine and wait for it to bleep. You will then get a receipt and a ticket for your journey.

My contactless payment failed? Unfortunately, due to the nature of contactless payments, our drivers will not know why a payment has failed. If for any reason a payment fails, you may wish to try a different card or pay using an alternative payment method.

Here are some of the more common reasons why a contactless transaction may have failed:

  • The card hasn't been approved by the bank for the transaction.
  • This can occur as a result of several contactless transactions in a short space of time which can trigger automated fraud risk management policies with your bank or card issuer.
  • The card hasn’t been used at a Chip and PIN terminal for a certain period.  Most banks and card issuers require a chip and PIN transaction every so often to help make sure it really is you using that card. Usually once a chip and PIN transaction has been seen by your card issuer, this temporary block will be removed.
  • More than one card has been detected by the reader at the same time.

If this happens the reader won’t take any payment and the driver will be notified that this is the case. If the contactless payment fails, you will need to pay using an alternative payment method.

How do I know If I have a contactless card? Look for the contactless symbol  on your credit, debit or pre-paid cards. Almost all new cards have this feature, however, if you’re not sure whether your card is contactless enabled please check with your bank or card provider.

Can I top-up my smart card using contactless?

We cannot currently accept contactless payments for topping up smart cards on our buses.  Please do this through our online shop where possible.
