COVID-19 Update - Further changes to services from Monday 30 March

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

After the government announcement on Monday 23 March that people must remain at home except for very limited circumstances, we have seen a further dramatic reduction in numbers of people travelling on our services.

We are determined to maintain a network throughout this unprecedented decline in bus use to ensure that essential workers are able to get to work.  However, given the unique situation, we have had to react to reduce the number of journeys on many routes, particularly those in the evening.  We will continue to provide a service, but we will be monitoring the situation constantly.  Public Health England has advised that public transport is the same as any other public space, and the current Government advice is that people are able to continue to use public transport if required.

We had already taken the decision to reduce services from 23rd March, but we now have to make further changes from Monday 30th March.

keeping you informed

Updates on Covid-19 and our buses can be found on our website and app. Normal service updates can still be found online and via our social media channels – although we will also use social media to post any updates around Covid-19 and our services too.

If you feel unwell we would advise that you follow NHS guidelines on self-isolating and do not travel. If you feel uneasy about handling cash, remember that you can pay for your travel by contactless, smartcard and using our mobile app.

We appreciate your patience during this challenging time, and recommend that if anyone has any concerns regarding their health, to follow the official advice which can be found at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus

a message from our Chief Executive, Robert Williams

“We are currently facing a situation that no one could have predicted. We are having to reduce our service level to balance low customer numbers and available resources.

With the government advising more people to stay at home and avoid public gatherings, the number of people travelling on our services has fallen dramatically and we expect that to continue.

We have, therefore, made the decision to switch to a reduced service from Monday 30 March to compensate for this. We will still be running buses for those who can still travel.

Obviously, the safety of our employees and customers are of vital importance to us. As well as reiterating Public Health England’s best practice guidance on hand-washing and hygiene to all our employees, we already have extensive cleaning programmes in place for all of our buses each evening, now supplemented with further cleaning to ensure all potential hard-surface contact areas, including bells and hand-poles, are regularly sanitised.  Fortunately, we already have a fantastic team of cleaners who maintain all our vehicles to high standards every day.

We are already planning for which members of which teams can follow government advice and work from home and which workers need to be physically on site.

Obviously, our drivers, engineers and cleaners cannot work from home so we will be monitoring their health and well-being during this critical time. It is important that we all stay calm and keep things moving where we can. We will, of course, continue to monitor both the number of customers travelling on the buses and the advice of the government.”
